i have a 1997 grand prix gt and recently i ran out of gas. after putting about 3 gallons in i tried to start it and it wouldn't. it seemed to want to but would just shut off. i left it overnight, put some fuel injector cleaner in it, and tried it again the next day. i would start but would not let me give it gas, or would not idle. i tried a few more times and it would never start. now it sounds like something is grinding inside the engine when i turn it over. any suggestions or ideas on what is wrong or what i can do.

*what's weird is that it was running perfectly beforehand and now it seems to have horrible problems.

Being that the fuel in the tank is what keep the pump cool....i would say you may have burnt up the fuel pump. Which typically comes as a module assembly.

Running a vehical out of fuel is the quickest way that I know of to burn up a pump. The pump and sending unit come as a complete unit and are a bit of the pricy side

How many miles on it? Is this the first time you ran it dry? Do you buy low quality fuel? FI service ever? Alot could play into the answer to this but with the information given I'd agree with the first to responses. In any case a new pump is likely in your future.
