My engin temp reads only about 1\4 on the gauge, and I've got very poor heat, any one have any ideas?

It sounds like you need to replace the thermostat in the engine.  I just finished doing the same thing to my own.  WHAT A PAIN!!
Good luck and God Bless,
Tommy

My 1999 had very poor heat about 3 years ago.  I also thought it was the thermostat.  Was under extended warranty so I went to the dealer.  NOT THE THERMOSTAT! Was a leaking INTAKE MANIFOLD.  A KNOWN PROBLEM.  Van had only about 36000 miles on it.  Dealer replaced intake manifold gasket with NEW STYLE and no heat problems since.  Get it pressure tested.  Don't let coolant LEAK into your ENGINE or you will be making a major repair.
