78 ENGINE SWAP
 

[align=left]I have a 78 pontiac firebird espirit i was wondering what would be a good size v8 engine for it right now it has a 231 buick. I was looking at a 350 chevy small block because parts a cheap and they are one of the most common engine you will come across. but i would like to here you opinon.

The SBC is a good choice if you have to stay on a budget. I would take the 231 and use it for a boat anchor.:D There are still a few 400's out there if you look hard enough. One thing to keep in mind if you go with a SBC is the fact that the fuel lines will require changing since the SBC fuel pump is on the pass side and the pontiac fuel pump is on the drivers side.

First off good choice on the 78 ;)

The 350 would deffinately be the most power for the buck. Performance parts are everywhere for small block chevys. You can make it fuel injected and bolt ona THM 700R4 tranny for some great milage too.

I personally would do a Pontiac 400 for sake of nostalgia. You will be spending alot more money to get power and you won't get the milage you would with a 350 (obviously)

Either motors WERE available in `78 though so neither is sacriligious.

In summary, if you're new to building cars I'd go with the 350. They're easy to get parts for and anyone can help you work on it.

If you just want to drive it and put a little more power in it, stick a SB 350 and be done with it. But if you want to join thebrotherhood go Poncho 400- even a well-built low compression version will have more torque than a SB 350.

You can still get somewhat decent mileage out of a 400- not too much cam, 625cfm Carter on a Edelbrock Performer intake, 1 5/8" headers w/ 2 1/2" collectors and full tailpipes. And a light right foot.
