shaking...really bad at ~20mph

my girlfriend has a 2000 grand prix 4 door and it shakes really bad at about 20mph, it still shakes at higher speeds but less noticable. her dad told her to get new tires and an alignment but i have a feeling that will not do anything...any thoughts what it could be? i drive a rwd car and am not too familiar with the drive of a fwd vechicle.

have the wheels balanced first.

Check the tires for any chunks missing in them. A tire out of balance or a frontend out of alignment will do this too.

I have 93 pontiac gp se. I am having problems with the car idling. I have done a tune up. I replaced the exhaust sys. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Jim

Hello!!
Check the rims. They are probably Alloy and if they are bent/warped at all...the car will shake at varied speeds. Otherwise it sounds like maybe a ball joint issue or something in the front end suspension(maybe a stabilizer bar). But I bet its one of the front rims!

Good luck

Hello!!
If it revs up and down....then its common for those years. If its a really bad idling problem where it stalls out I would get a tech to check your computer. Probably where the problem lies.

Good luck!!

Yeah check the tires. I had this happen once and I had a tread separation on my 99. This car can't hold an alignment for sh!t. It seems every 8000-10000 miles it needs an alignment

Tires are the most common cause of shakes. A tires doesnt even have to be worn out to be bad. I have seen dozens of tires with under 10K miles on then that the belts seperated inside the tire. When the belts come apart on the inside of the tire, it causes part of the tire to bulge, causing a shake. Front end parts rarely cause shakes. Unless you have some steering components that are worn to the point that they are ready to fall off. Either way, have you tires and front end checked out. An alignment is always a good idea, but you need good tires and a solid front end first
