1998 Sunfire 2.2L
I have a 98 sunfire with 123,000 miles on it. It's worked great most of the time I have owned it, but over the last few years I'm having a problem which is growing worse and worse by the day. It started out that whenever it was hot outside, the car didn't want to start. It would take a lot of turning over and gas before it would go. I live in Colorado, so some days start really cold and end up very hot or vice versa. Changes in temps always cause this problem. Sometimes the problem is accompanied by the very strong smell of gas - maybe because it's flooded, I'm not sure. But then again, sometimes I'll just be sitting at a stoplight and I can smell the gas. My wife won't drive it anymore because she says it always smells like gas to her and it makes her sick. Sometimes the check engine light will come on, but it always goes away on it's own. A few times I have hooked it up to an ODBII scanner and found the error code that has something to do with the charcoal canister. Does this sound like it could be the problem? A mechanic I had talked to didn't think so, says they are probably unrelated - but I'm not sure. I'll probably replace the charcoal anyhow, but if anybody has a better idea, I'd love to hear it.
