Default 96 Sunfire Trans Problem

I drove my automatic 1996 Pontiac Sunfire around today no problem, but when I got home, I tried to back up and my gearshift goes up and down without an resistance, and does not go into gear.

I assume the linkage broke when I was shifting to put in in park and it stopped at neutral. I can feel the rod connected to the shifter move, so I assume it's something I can't get to on my own.

Can anyone help me describe this in technical terms to my mechanic?

Any idea how much this would cost?

Thx
