need help...

someone locally is selling a 1996 sunfire. i stopped to look at it and the paper in the window says that they had problems with the engine, and when they took it in to get checked out, they were told that the engine wasnt fireing on all cylenders and it would be cheaper to just replace the engine. They are asking $600 for the car and the body has no problems. i found an engine (2.4L) at a junk yard that came from a 1998, and they are asking $375 (65,000 miles). the last piece that i need to know is what size engine is already in the car. if it is the same size, would it be possible to put the '98 engine in the '96 car, and if so what would i need to do it. if its not the same size, then would it be possible to put a 2.4L engine in the car that had a 2.2L? if so, then what would io need to do the job? and lastly, would it be possible that i wouldnt have to replace the engine? thanx in advance!!

RE: need help...

If its a 96 it could be a 2.2 LT mine was a 2.4 quad 4 putting a 2.2 in a 2.4 could be difficult cause the engine mounts different I think dont quote me on it. Also the trans would be different also. If you know alot about engines it could be that you could just rebuild the engine the pistons could be worn or what ever you know if the car is a 2.4 cause it should say 2.4 on top of the engine or do a vin search for hte code i think 2.2 has a f vin code. or if its not fireing it could also be the coil pacs cause sunfires dont have distributors. I would suggest looking into getting a 97 2.4 quad 4 manual trans sunfire i had mine for years and when it died ( cause I beat the **** out of it) everyhting was original on I never changed a single hing on that car exept the belts and breaks. but if the body is worth it do a search for 2.4 sunfire motors and try to make it stick if its not to difficult and if you have the money. but best bet is to just buy a used one with low miles. If you can. Hope this helps,
