Default Timing Problem

I have an 97 grand am SE 5 speed. the waterpump had went out so i replaced it, I guess when i took the chain off I had knocked the timing off a little bit. I tried to crank it and it wouldn't fire. I took everything apart again and went by the haynes repair manual for setting the timing. Everything is lined up as to what the book reads. But when you turn it over it seems to want to crank slow and doesn't fire? I was wondering if anyone here could help me with the timing issue. Thanks anyone!
