I have a 2001 Grand Prix GTP and every so often the engine sputters, sometimes stalls, and at the same time the traction control goes off, and the tach shuts off. This stays like this until I re-start the car. Any ideas as to what would cause this?

 

there are lots of possible causes why engine sputters: first check your fuel filters; it might be that your ignition coil has prob; it is also good to check the oxygen sensor it might be bad; check also for some vacuum leak or a plug wire short to ground or the distributor cap or coil shorting.. try to check on these things, and keep us posted of what other things did you find out.. good luck

 

engine stalling is often a sign of alternator failure.. that's what most mechanics would say.[sm=signs007.gif] I had the same problem for my Solstice a few months ago, and I had to get a Pontiac alternator to replace the old one. A Pontiac blower motor got added to the list too, thanks to my mechanic.[:@]

 

the reason the engine sputters is because the trac control thinks the wheels are spinning so it retards the motor my sunfire has done this several times everytime i shut it off and restart it and everything is fine until yesterday now my car won't even start i was told there is a wheel bearing that starts to go bad and it triggers the trac control i'm going to get my car in asap and i'll let you know what's really up
