Normally you add coolant to the overflow tank. As long as you are using a 50/50 mix of coolant/water you should be ok, assuming you added it to the radiator itself. When you say the low coolant light keeps coming on do you mean it goes off after you add coolant and comes back on later? Is the system really low on coolant? If not, you may have a corroded or bad sensor. It is located in radiator below the filler neck. Disconnect the wiring to it, pull the flat U shaped clip that holds it in. Clean it good and put it back in. If it still trips the light and you are not low on coolant, replace the sensor. They are around $20.
